Why do we have problems with managing projects?

Do you have a sense that projects, and how they are being managed, are not as they could or should be? Perhaps you've experienced a project that ran over budget or completed late?  Maybe the completed project was not received and welcomed as you expected?  
We want to look at how projects are really undertaken in organisations. What are the possible misunderstandings and assumptions that can capsize good intentions and what problems arise.
Could we be missing something that is preventing us from finding a better way to manage projects?

 

Unchallenged assumptions and missed challenges...

There is much misunderstanding about projects and project management. Many senior people, both in industry and in academia, have made incorrect assumptions about projects and project management.  This has led to the adoption of incorrect approaches, poor decision making and bad practices that have propagated through the profession.  This has to change and it has to change now.
