Project Mastery

A different way to understand Projects and how they can be managed.

Assumption: Project management is engineering management

This has produced a mind-set that expects projects to have four specific attributes:

  • Generic placeholder image
    Projects have a life cycle
that is specific to solving engineering projects
  • Generic placeholder image
    Projects are about the Task
project work focuses on completing the task
  • Generic placeholder image
    There are always 'right' answers
    solutions to problems are 'correct'

Project management is engineering management

Asssumption 1

Projects have been in existence for thousands of years, producing constructions such as the pyramids in Egypt, Stonehenge in the UK and the Great Wall of China. The origins of modern thinking about projects and project management arose in the early 20th century, specifically to solve complicated engineering problems.
The commonly known techniques, such as Gantt and PERT were developed on large engineering projects during this time. These developments addressed projects typically found in the construction and manufacturing industries.
Therefore, it is no surprise that modern-day projects have adopted engineering problem-solving methods that are now considered to be core to project management.

Projects demand that we must address Uncertainty!

The fundamental reason why project management is different to other types of management is that it must address and deal with uncertainty.
Unncertainty arises from many areas of project activity due to, for example, fixed budget and deadlines with defined outcomes; behaviour of the people involved; and changing circumstances as the project develops.
